Breast augmentation is typically performed to enlarge small breasts, underdeveloped breasts or breasts that have decreased in size after a woman has had children. It can also make your breasts more symmetrical if one breast is significantly larger than the other.
Breast augmentation is accomplished by surgically inserting an implant behind each breast. Implants are filled with sterile saltwater (saline) solution. The most common site for the incision through which the implant will be inserted is in the crease just underneath your breast. The incision is very small and inconspicuous in this location. Other possible incision sites are around the areola (the pink skin surrounding the nipple) or in the armpit.
A pocket is created for the implant either behind your breast tissue or behind the muscle between your breast and chest wall. In most cases, we prefer to place the implant behind the muscle because it creates a very natural appearance and should also make it easier for you to obtain a good mammogram in the future.
At Cosmetic Surgery Associates of Westchester, we have performed hundreds of breast augmentations. We understand that this is an important decision for a woman, and we know exactly how to help you attain the look that you want.
