Post-Operative Recovery Guide

By Dr. Samuel Beran, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon

Your recovery is just as important as the surgery itself. At Dr. Samuel Beran’s practice, we are committed to helping you heal safely, comfortably, and confidently. This guide outlines general recommendations for post-operative care. Specific instructions will be provided based on your individual procedure.

Immediate Post-Surgery (First 24–72 Hours)

  1. Rest is essential.
Take it easy. Have a responsible adult stay with you for at least 24 hours.
  2. Follow all instructions carefully.
Use medications exactly as prescribed — including antibiotics and pain relievers.
  3. Manage swelling and discomfort.
Apply cold compresses (if advised) and keep your head elevated, especially after facial procedures.
  4. Stay hydrated and eat light.
Begin with fluids and bland foods. Avoid alcohol and smoking.
  5. Monitor for complications.
Call our office if you experience:
    • Excessive bleeding
    • Fever over 100.4°F
    • Sudden swelling or pain
    • Difficulty breathing

First Week: Healing in Progress

  1. Wear your compression garment (if prescribed).
This helps minimize swelling and support your results.
  2. Avoid strenuous activity.
Gentle walks are encouraged, but no heavy lifting, bending, or vigorous exercise.
  3. Keep your incisions clean and dry.
You may be instructed to gently cleanse the area and reapply dressings.
  4. Attend all follow-up appointments.
These check-ins are vital for monitoring your healing and adjusting care.

Weeks 2–6: Recovery & Return to Normal Activity

  1. Gradually resume light activities.
With Dr. Beran’s approval, you may return to work and resume non-strenuous activities.
  2. Scar care matters.
We may recommend silicone gels, scar creams, or gentle massage.
  3. Protect your skin from the sun.
UV exposure can worsen scarring. Use SPF 30+ and wear protective clothing.
  4. Emotional recovery is real.
Ups and downs are common. Healing takes time, and so does adjusting to your new look.

Long-Term Care: Protecting Your Results

  1. Maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Stable weight, good nutrition, and hydration support long-lasting results.
  2. Keep your follow-up schedule.
Regular check-ins allow Dr. Beran to ensure everything is progressing well.
  3. Be patient.
Final results may take months to fully reveal. Trust the process.
